VMware Releases Virtual Desktop Manager 2.0

On January 30th, VMware announced the release of Virtual Desktop Manager 2.0, an enhancement to it's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.  VDM 2.0 integrates a Connection Broker, which allows end users to see the desktops which they are authorized to access.  Additional features of VDM 2.0 are Web Based management, Smart Pooling, and AD Integration, among others.

In order to help our client community better understand this technology, Flytrap will be hosting several small dinner seminars focused on the VDI / VDM technology.  For more information on these seminars, please go to our Events page.

The above diagram shows how VDI integrates within a Virtual Infrastructure.  Similar to virtualized servers, virtual desktops reside within VMware's ESX server.  However, access to virtual desktops is managed by VDM, which controls who has access to each virtual desktop.  Once users connect through the VDM, applications are presented as if they are being run locally.  The basic components of a VDI infrastructure are:

  • Virtual Machines running desktop OSes
  • Thin Clients (or PCs)
  • VDM
    • Administrator
    • Connection Broker
    • Agent (installed on VM)
    • Client (for PCs accessing Virtual Desktops)
    • Web Access (similar to VDM Client, but uses http to get to VDM)
